Engine of the regional energy transition
The energy turnaround did not require any strategic reorientation on our part - on the contrary: we, Stadtwerke Gießen, have been making our contribution for some time now. This is because we have been focusing on decentralised energy generation with plants in the region for many years. Around 30 years ago, our company commissioned the first combined heat and power plant (CHP), which generates electricity and heat at the same time according to the principle of combined heat and power (CHP). There are now more than 167 CHP plants spread across the entire city of Giessen and the surrounding area, and the number is constantly growing. Our heating network offers ideal conditions for this particularly efficient type of decentralised energy generation, as the heat can be put to optimum use. We supply our household and commercial customers with the electricity generated in the CHP plants (Giessen green electricity). With our Natur-Power products, we offer our customers 100% green electricity from renewable energies and already carry the green electricity label with our Natur-Power Aktiv 12 electricity tariff.

PowerLahn
Smart energy from the Lahn. The innovative "PowerLahn" iKWK plant will be launched in Giessen in 2026. Discover how efficiently and climate-friendly heat and electricity can be generated.

CHP plants
In decentralised plants - spread across the entire city of Giessen and the surrounding area - we generate heat and electricity in parallel using the principle of combined heat and power (CHP). This combined generation is particularly efficient and environmentally friendly.

TREA I
Since 2010, TREA I (Thermal Residue Treatment and Energy Utilisation Plant) has made a significant contribution to the generation of heat in Giessen. Processed waste is used as fuel here, replacing valuable primary energies such as natural gas, heating oil or coal.

TREA II
With TREA II, another plant in Giessen, we also produce heating energy for the Giessen heating network from processed waste. Like TREA I, this plant plays a key role in making our city a pioneer in terms of climate-friendly energy supply.

Biogas plants
The biogas plants in Großen-Buseck and Heuchelheim are key components of our in-house generation of heat and electricity. Here, locally available, renewable raw materials are utilised as a source of energy.

Wood chip heating plants
All of our wood chip heating plants use waste wood as fuel, which is shredded into wood chips. The use of waste wood is possible thanks to the complex flue gas purification in our plants. In this way, we supply a large number of modern detached houses with heat every year.
