Clean drinking water is a vital resource. The United Nations has been drawing attention to this since 1993 with World Water Day on 22 March. Once again this year, Stadtwerke Gießen is using this day of honour to offer a guided tour of the Queckborn waterworks.
German drinking water is of exceptional quality. In the case of the water pumped by Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG), this is due to the basalt rock, which acts as a particularly good filter. Just as important are the regular inspections, which fulfil the highest standards throughout Germany. Consequently, German drinking water occupies a top position in international comparisons. And even surpasses many bottled mineral waters in terms of purity.
The strictly controlled foodstuff has a long way to go before it flows out of the tap. Visitors can find out exactly which stages it passes through on the guided tour of the Queckborn waterworks, which SWG is inviting them to on 20 March 2020. This is because the waterworks plays a key role - and has done for more than 125 years. The ideal place to introduce interested parties to the topic of drinking water. Among other things, the experts from SWG will go into the history of water supply and the current pumping and transport technology. To demonstrate all these aspects in real operation, the tour takes visitors through the pump house, the spring garden and the centre zone tank in Annerod.
Free bus ride to the waterworks
Taking part in the tour is very easy. SWG has set up a free shuttle from Giessen for 20 March. The bus departs at 14:00 from the bus stop Behördenzentrum in the Ostanlage opposite the Kinopolis. After the tour, the special bus will take participants back there - the scheduled arrival time is 5.30 pm.
Interested parties can register with SWG until 13 March by calling the service number 0800 2302100. The number of participants is limited to 40.
Group tours of the waterworks
SWG also organises guided tours of the Queckborn waterworks independently of World Water Day - for school classes, clubs or other larger groups of 20 to 35 people. To make an appointment for a tour, a corresponding form is available at www.swg-wasser.de.
