Giessen municipal utilities chlorinate drinking water

Since yesterday (Monday, 11 July 2005), Giessen's drinking water has been chlorinated, reported Stadtwerke Giessen AG (SWG) in a press release. The reason for this is the suspected contamination of the drinking water. This is the result of a routine examination of the water. Until the final results of the microbiological test are available, the municipal utilities will add chlorine to the water. The areas affected are Giessen (city) and the districts of Kleinlinden, Wieseck and Petersweiher. Stadtwerke recommends that customers in these areas boil their drinking water before use. When making coffee, the coffee machine already fulfils this precautionary purpose. There is no contamination in the districts of Allendorf, Lützellinden and Rödgen. It is therefore not necessary to boil the water in these areas. Due to the deviating results from the normal values, the municipal utilities decided to chlorinate the water. "There is no cause for panic," said the head of the water supply/plants, graduate engineer Peter Keller. "We immediately informed the public health department and repeated the sample," added Keller. The final results of the further tests are expected next Friday.
