Still a low number of coliform germs in the water

Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) is continuing to chlorinate the drinking water. "The last water sample taken last Friday still contained a small number of coliform germs. We have therefore decided, in consultation with the public health department, to continue to chlorinate the water. As before, it is not necessary to boil the water," says graduate engineer Peter Keller, Head of Water Systems Engineering at SWG. The entire Giessen water network will be chlorinated with the exception of the districts of Lützellinden, Allendorf and Rödgen and parts of Kleinlinden.

Chlorination for the whole week
SWG will not be able to stop chlorination until next Monday, 12 June 2006 at the earliest. This is because the water samples from two consecutive days must be bacteriologically flawless before chlorination can be stopped. Pe-ter Keller explains: "We will take samples again on Tuesday and Wednesday. As these have to be incubated for three days before a result is available, the earliest we can stop adding chlorine is next Monday."

SWG continues to suspect that the cause of the contamination is the extensive pipework currently being carried out in the Giessen water network.
