Around twenty visitors from Giessen and the surrounding communities took advantage of "Water Day" on Monday, 22 March, to pay a visit to the SWG waterworks in Queckborn. A guided tour of the elevated tank near Annerod was also on the programme. There, the participants learnt more about the technical and human resources required to make a modern drinking water supply reliable and safe. "Of course, many people don't realise this," remarked Norbert Pausner, who took the opportunity to explain the complicated filter system of the elevated tank. The group leader for water supply at SWG was visibly pleased with the attention his work received on Water Day. After all, the municipal utility's contribution to water quality - although considerable - often remains invisible during the year.
During World Water Day, which takes place every year on 22 March, the United Nations calls for the sustainable use of the vital resource of drinking water. In 2010, the focus is on the growing challenges of water quality worldwide in line with the motto "Clean water for a healthy world".
