Once again, dubious callers are trying to obtain sensitive customer data. In some cases, they pretend to be employees of Stadtwerke Giessen.

Once again this year, potential telephone fraudsters are on the prowl. They are making unsolicited calls to customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) and trying to persuade them to give their customer number. Sometimes the dodgy callers claim to be acting in the name of or on behalf of SWG and make offers to supply them with electricity. Known numbers are (030) 25 54 60 65, (030) 25 54 64 60 31 and 030 16 63 80 324.

"Dubious companies are probably taking advantage of the tense current situation," says Matthias Acker, deputy company spokesperson at SWG, categorising the attempts at fraud and adds: "We are very grateful that our customers are reporting such incidents to us." In fact, SWG is asking people to get in touch as soon as anyone calls and tries to catch customers using dishonest methods. The fact is that SWG warns its customers if it learns of such actions.

Protecting themselves

"Unfortunately, we can't prevent such calls," Matthias Acker continues. That's why it's important to be prepared for these perfidious scams and to react correctly if the worst comes to the worst. It's not that difficult. If you follow a simple rule, you can protect yourself relatively well: if someone asks for personal details or a meter number, simply hang up. "That's not rude, it's appropriate for the situation," summarises Matthias Acker. Because not getting involved in a conversation with the rhetorically skilled fraudsters in the first place averts the danger before it arises. By the way: SWG never asks for customer data over the phone. After all, they have all the information they need.

Those affected can report descriptions of attempted fraud via various channels: by telephone on 0800 23 02 100, by email to info@stadtwerke-giessen.de or by WhatsApp to the number 0151 15213066.
