Several customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) recently fell victim to fraudulent phone calls. "At least one so-called low-cost electricity provider is currently using brazen means to catch customers again - obviously targeting older people," explains Ulli Boos, Head of Marketing at SWG.
How the scam works: The callers try to get SWG customers' personal details over the phone. They lure them in with particularly favourable prices and claim that they need the meter number to prepare a personalised offer. As soon as they have this number, the dubious competitors cancel the contract on behalf of SWG customers.
Due to this practice, Stadtwerke Gießen advises customers to cancel such telephone calls immediately. Under no circumstances should those affected disclose personal data such as customer or meter numbers. "It is not rude to simply hang up in such a case, it is for your own protection," explains Ulli Boos. Anyone who has accidentally passed on relevant data to ominous callers or received an unsolicited confirmation of cancellation from SWG should contact SWG as soon as possible.
If fraud is suspected, the staff at the SWG customer centre can help - by calling the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile networks) Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
