Customers of Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) have been reporting dubious callers for several weeks now. Over the past few days, a customer from Giessen received a call that clearly exceeded the limits of unfair competition. The suspected fraudsters claimed to work for SWG and to have to check the man's annual bill. An employee would come to his home in the next few days. If the bill that had already been paid was not correct, an additional payment might have to be made in cash.
"Fortunately, the customer was not fooled by this particularly brazen scam, but hung up immediately - which was exactly the right thing to do. He didn't respond to any further calls," explains Ulli Boos, Head of Marketing at SWG. He warns against passing on personal data or even letting the suspected fraudsters into your home: "Employees of Stadtwerke Gießen can identify themselves at any time and would never make an appointment at home for similar billing issues or announce a possible additional payment in cash."
SWG customers should therefore always ask to see their ID and contact SWG immediately if they are not sure whether the ID is genuine.
Anyone who also suspects fraud should contact SWG's customer service immediately. The employees can be reached on the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile phone networks) from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
