Unknown persons have sent spam e-mails in the name of Stadtwerke Gießen. However, customers are almost certainly not affected.

During the night of 8 to 9 October, unknown persons sent spam e-mails in the name of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). The good news is that SWG customers are highly unlikely to have been affected. This is because the criminals behind the campaign appear to have created the email addresses at random. It would therefore be pure coincidence if SWG customers received such a spam e-mail. Moreover, it is clear that the perpetrator(s) never had access to SWG customer data.

Easy to unmask

Nevertheless, SWG advises caution and to delete strange e-mails immediately. The spam e-mails are easy to recognise: This is because the salutation "Dear Sir" is followed by supposed offers - framed in emojis - and a link. Otherwise, the details are similar to those of the usual digital mail from the customer portal. The sender's address is no-reply@stadtwerke-giessen.de, the subject line says "Your registration for the customer portal".

"If you actually receive such an email in your inbox, we strongly advise you to delete it unopened and never click on the link," recommends SWG company spokesperson Ulli Boos. It goes without saying that SWG is investigating the attack with due diligence. In addition, the responsible experts have already introduced effective protective measures. This includes SWG temporarily taking its customer portal offline for security reasons. "The deactivation is purely precautionary. We apologise to all customers for the inconvenience and will bring the customer portal back online as soon as possible," adds Ulli Boos.
