Fraudsters in the Giessen area are currently trying to obtain data from customers of Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) over the telephone. Several customers have contacted SWG in the past few days to say that callers have been pretending to be employees of Stadtwerke Giessen and trying to obtain customer data. One caller, for example, claimed to have been asked for the customer's meter number on behalf of SWG.
SWG advises everyone not to give out personal data over the phone or at the front door under any circumstances. "Unfortunately, in the past and currently, there have been repeated situations in which customers have been asked to disclose their data," explains Ulli Boos, Head of Marketing at SWG. "However, we never clarify questions involving personal data over the phone. And when an SWG employee comes to a customer's home, they announce themselves and can also identify themselves." SWG customers should therefore always ask to see their ID and contact Stadtwerke Giessen immediately if they are not sure whether the ID is genuine.
If someone has accidentally passed on data to a stranger or signed a new contract prematurely, it is best to contact SWG as soon as possible.
Anyone who also suspects fraud should contact SWG's customer service immediately. The employees can be reached on the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile phone networks) from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
