Fraudsters in the Giessen area are currently trying to obtain data from customers of Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) over the phone. One affected customer contacted SWG and described how a man on the phone had pretended to be an SWG employee and informed her of a letter announcing new tariffs at the municipal utilities. He said that he needed her meter number to be able to change the tariff. The man ended the phone call immediately when the woman told him that she worked for the municipal utility company herself.
SWG advises everyone not to give out personal details on the phone or at the front door under any circumstances. "In the past, there have unfortunately been repeated situations in which customers have been asked to disclose their data," explains Ulli Boos, Head of Marketing at SWG. "However, we never clarify issues involving personal data over the phone. And when an SWG employee comes to a customer's home, they announce themselves and can also identify themselves."
If someone has accidentally passed on data to a stranger or hastily signed a new contract, it is best to contact SWG immediately.
Anyone who also suspects fraud should contact SWG's customer service immediately. The employees can be reached on the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile phone networks) from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
