SWG modernise gas and water pipes
Stadtwerke Gießen is replacing old natural gas and drinking water pipes in two streets in Heuchelheim.
Supply lines for natural gas and drinking water are designed for many years of operation. However, there comes a time when operators need to replace their pipelines with new ones as a precautionary measure in order to continue to guarantee a reliable supply. This is exactly what will happen in Heuchelheim from 1 September 2025 - more precisely in Beethovenstraße and Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. Here, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is replacing natural gas pipes made of grey cast iron with those made of high-strength plastic. At the same time, SWG is also replacing the drinking water pipeline on behalf of the municipality of Heuchelheim. The new pipeline is again made of cast steel.
It goes without saying that the SWG experts are taking a critical look at the exposed house connections as part of the civil engineering work. "If the colleagues notice that the ravages of time have also gnawed away at one or other of the natural gas house connections, they contact the homeowners and replace the component directly," explains SWG company spokesperson Ulli Boos. The procedure differs for water house inlets: Here, the SWG specialists document the respective circumstances and coordinate with the responsible parties in the municipality as to whether the connection will be replaced or not.
Certain restrictions
It is in the nature of things that such work is accompanied by certain restrictions. This is because the pipes run under the carriageway and sometimes also under the pavement. This means that both roads have to be fully closed in the shifting construction site area. As a result, some car parks will be closed for the duration of the work. In addition, access to individual properties may not be possible at times. "If everything goes according to plan, our colleagues will be able to complete the construction work in mid-December," announces Ulli Boos, adding: "We ask all those affected for their understanding."
It may be necessary to interrupt the supply for a short time. "We will announce this in good time by letter," promises Ulli Boos.
