In the north of Giessen, Stadtwerke Giessen is connecting three streets to district heating. At the same time, they are renovating the electricity, gas and water pipes. Among other things, the work will lead to a diversion of bus route 15.

District heating will play an increasingly important role in heating buildings in the future. For this reason, extensions to the existing network are planned throughout Giessen over the next few years. Several residents in Ludwig-Richter-Straße and its side streets Wingert and Niederfeldstraße have already expressed interest in this modern and efficient form of heating and hot water preparation. For this reason, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) began the corresponding construction work at the beginning of March.

However, the current measure is not limited to laying the thickly insulated pipes for district heating. SWG is also renewing the electricity, gas and water pipes at the same time. Their renovation would have been due in the coming years anyway. The SWG experts are also checking the various house connections. And if necessary, they replace an old one with a new one - always in consultation with the owners of the properties concerned, of course. "This saves costs for everyone involved and ensures security of supply," explains Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for SWG.

Reducing restrictions to a minimum

Naturally, construction work of this kind takes several weeks. Unfortunately, restrictions for neighbours cannot be avoided during this time. "We are doing everything we can to minimise any inconvenience," continues Ulli Boos. This also includes adapting the plan agreed with the road traffic authority for setting up the construction site to the actual conditions on site: shortly after work began, it became apparent that the originally planned barrier would have made it impossible to deliver to a grocery shop by lorry. "Our colleagues reacted to this and developed an alternative solution with the road traffic authorities," says Ulli Boos, describing the procedure. It involves closing one side of Ludwig-Richter-Straße in the direction of Marburger Straße. The resulting one-way street regulation will apply from next Friday, 21 March 2025. If everything goes according to plan, Ludwig-Richter-Straße will be open to traffic in both directions again from the end of July - although the work is likely to take a little longer overall.

Bus route 15 will be diverted

The fact that Ludwig-Richter-Straße is temporarily only accessible in the direction of Wiesecker Weg does not only affect private transport. Bus route 15 is also affected - but only in the direction of "Burgenring". For the duration of the partial closure, the buses will turn off Wiesecker Weg into Dürerstraße after the "Feuerbachstraße" stop and then onto Marburger Straße. Here they will serve the "Dürerstraße" stop - as a kind of replacement for the "Röderring" and "Holbeinring" stops. Important to know: The "Röderring" stop can still be reached with line 5.
