Learning with fun: this summer, children from Giessen and the surrounding area once again came to the Queckborn waterworks to learn more about our drinking water as part of Stadtwerke Giessen's Fabius holiday games.

The water has travelled an exciting journey before it flows out of the tap. Where it comes from, how it is purified and how it finally ends up in our homes is what the children learnt at the Fabius holiday games organised by Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). Between 15 July and 2 August, a total of 320 girls and boys aged between six and twelve visited the Queckborn waterworks. The educational and exciting excursion has long been a firm fixture in the holiday programme of the city of Giessen and the surrounding communities. The children learn all kinds of interesting facts about drinking water in a fun way - and are very enthusiastic about it.

Learning with Fabius

Once at the waterworks, the adventure began with an informative film: SWG mascot Fabius spends a day at the waterworks. In the film, the red dragon entertainingly explains to the attentive girls and boys why clean drinking water is so important and how much effort is involved in extracting and transporting it. Curious? This film and other videos are available online at: www.fabius-entdeckertour.de

The children then learnt in a brief overview that SWG is not only responsible for water extraction and delivery, but also for Giessen's local public transport and swimming pools, among other things.

Acquiring knowledge through play

The children started the second part of the morning with a vivid and instructive pantomime on the careful use of water. Afterwards, an obstacle course awaited the girls and boys in the outdoor area. Their task: to carry a water-filled container to the finish line without spilling anything. The topic of drinking water pollution was also on the programme.

Catering included

SWG had a selection of sausages, bread rolls and fruit ready for the children to fortify themselves after all their efforts. At the end of the eventful day, all participants received a ticket for the Ringallee swimming centre and a water bottle.
