It's not just joggers and cyclists who are drawn to the forest for sporting activities, families are also increasingly seeking the tranquillity of deciduous and coniferous trees. As a passionate gardener, Thomas Aust from the Technical Services - Gardening department at Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) was particularly keen to propose the reforestation of Giessen's municipal forest as one of the 75 good deeds. He himself has been working as a gardener at SWG for over 20 years and, together with his colleagues, maintains the outdoor areas of the Ringallee swimming centre and the SWG administration building in Lahnstraße, among other things. "Because some spruce trees in the municipal forest died due to bark beetles and therefore had to be felled, we had the idea of reforesting part of this area," explains Thomas Aust. On Thursday, 4 April, he presented Ernst-Ludwig Kriep, head of the municipal forestry department, with a symbolic cheque for 75 trees. "We are very pleased about the donation from SWG and that we can now replace some of the dead trees between Licher Strasse and the Europaviertel neighbourhood," says Ernst-Ludwig Kriep. Oak, hazel, wild service tree and crab apple trees around 1.20 to 1.50 metres tall are to be planted. The young trees will be provided with a protective cover to prevent browsing by wild animals.
