Once again, fraudsters in the Giessen area are trying to gain access to private homes under false pretences. On Thursday morning, 14 September, a concerned customer of Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) reported that a man had rung her doorbell and asked her to let him into her flat. He claimed to be an employee of SWG - but was unable to show any identification.
SWG warns against such scams and advises everyone to refuse access to the house or flat under all circumstances to people who claim to be employees of Stadtwerke but cannot clearly identify themselves as such. "Fraudsters often try to gain access under a pretext - such as an alleged emergency," explains Ulli Boos, Head of Marketing at SWG. "The man who was up to mischief near the new cemetery on Thursday, for example, claimed that there were bacteria in the water pipe."
Anyone who is visited by suspicious persons or receives dubious calls from alleged SWG employees can help to make life more difficult for the fraudsters - by calling SWG's customer service. The more information SWG has, the faster they can act and uncover the scam. The employees can be reached on the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile phone networks) from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
