The Metering Point Operation Act poses major challenges for the energy industry. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has founded the subsidiary smartStadtwerke GmbH & Co. KG to successfully meet these challenges. The aim is to gain other Hessian energy suppliers for close co-operation in order to solve the upcoming tasks in a strong network. In Oberhessische Versorgungsbetriebe AG (OVAG), SWG has found its first partner for this pioneering project: OVAG acquired a 25.1 per cent stake in smartSTADTwerke.

This is the nucleus for a network of municipal energy suppliers that will focus on intelligent metering in the future. However, smartSTADTwerke will also explore opportunities in the constantly changing energy market. The idea behind it: To bundle expertise in central areas in the sense of a regional platform and thus utilise synergies. At the top of the agenda are topics such as the energy transition, digitalisation and electromobility. "The individual partners contribute their different experiences in such a constellation. It is precisely this shared expertise that forms an ideal basis for holistic approaches and ultimately economically successful solutions," says Markus Klüh, Managing Director of smartSTADTwerke.

The smartSTADTwerke concept is clearly convincing. The final negotiations are currently underway with Kreiswerke Main-Kinzig, which would like to acquire a ten per cent stake, and Stadtwerke Marburg, which intends to acquire a four per cent stake. In addition, those responsible at smartSTADTwerke are already in promising talks with other potential partners from all over Hesse
