The city is currently preparing for the 2014 State Garden Show at numerous locations in Giessen. Since Monday 19 March, work has also begun on the eastern bank of the Lahn near the corner of Sudetenlandstraße and Wißmarer Weg. From 2013, a modern suspension bridge will cross the Lahn there and connect Leimenkauter Weg in the west with Bootshausstraße in the east.
"This will not only provide a quick way to get from the Lahn floodplain to the Wieseck floodplain during the State Garden Show," explains Mayor Gerda Weigel-Greilich. "The new bridge is also one of the first steps towards opening up the Lahn to make it an even more attractive centre of attraction for the city's residents and tourists by 2014."

Expanding the district heating network
Even before the new bridge is built, Stadtwerke Gießen wants to create another connection between the northern and western parts of the city: SWG is currently connecting the district heating network between Sudetenlandstraße in the east and Leimenkauter Weg in the west with a pipeline around 250 metres long. "We are using the same corridor here that is also intended for the cycle and pedestrian path. However, we're not going over the Lahn, but under it," says Matthias Funk, Head of Heat Supply at SWG. The district heating pipes, which are around 31 centimetres thick, will be laid underground with the help of flush drilling.
SWG expects to have completed the work by the end of May. The respective connections to the district heating network will then be made at the flood dyke on the western side and in Fuldaer Straße on the eastern side. Matthias Funk explains the benefits of this: "Thanks to the additional connection, we are increasing capacity in Nordstadt. This means we can realise the further expansion of the district heating supply there. We would have liked to have done this earlier, but it was only when the city came into possession of the land for the cycle and footpath that we had the opportunity to do so. We have now utilised this."
