Stadtwerke Gießen is supporting the local history association Schiffenberg e.V. - local group Watzenborn-Steinberg and is participating in the renovation of the refuge at the Limes.
The old refuge at the Limes has had an eventful history: built in the 1960s, it burnt down completely in 1993. It was only rebuilt five years later. But the ravages of time are gnawing away at it again - the paint is peeling. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is now providing the urgently needed new coat of paint. SWG's commitment is one of 75 good deeds that the company is performing in the region to mark its anniversary.
The initiator of this good deed was Stadtwerke sponsor Markus Zimmer. He has been an active member of the Schiffenberg local history association in Watzenborn-Steinberg for two years and is very enthusiastic about the maintenance work around the Limes. Markus Zimmer works as a bus driver for the SWG subsidiary MIT.BUS and lives in the Grüningen district of Pohlheim. His personal tale of woe brought him to the Limes. He sought peace and strength here during long walks while suffering from a serious illness. "The Limes helped me to overcome my illness," he explains. "I wanted to give something back and joined the local history association to look after the place that gave me so much strength. I'm naturally delighted that my suggestion has resulted in this good deed."
On Saturday 4 May, he handed over the donation cheque to the two chairmen of the Heimatvereinigung, Professor Dr Georg Erhardt and Hans-Willi Büchler. "We are delighted that the donation from SWG will enable us to refurbish the refuge at the Limes," the two chairmen agreed. "We will remove the old paint, prime the wood and finally apply the new colour. Then the hut will shine in new splendour within a few days."
