A new float for the jetty at Dutenhofener See will make it easier for the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) Waldgirmes-Naunheim-Dorlar to keep watch at weekends in future. Karsten Will from the Energy & Water Networks department at Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) suggested the local DLRG group for one of the 75 good deeds. As the organisation's cash auditor, he is aware of its limited financial resources. The ageing and repeatedly repaired jetty at Lake Dutenhofen was at the top of the investment list.
"I've been a lifeguard since I was a teenager and now train the next generation myself," says SWG mentor Karsten Will. "For years, we sealed the floating plastic tank that served as part of the jetty at Dutenhofener See with silicone. But now the cracks were getting too big and we needed another solution." The DLRG volunteers removed the old plastic tank and disposed of it. Now, two two-square-metre floats encased in a metal frame have replaced the old tank.
Karsten Will presented the symbolic donation cheque for a new jetty to Chairman Klaus Silbach on 13 July. "Our local group has been making sure that children and adults can swim safely in Lake Dutenhofen on summer weekends for 30 years," says Klaus Silbach. "That's why it was a huge help to us that the SWG helped us to purchase the float for the jetty - so that we can continue our guard duty as usual."
