Giessen's city buses will continue to run according to the holiday timetable in the coming week. This means that the usual morning bus services will be cancelled.

Once again, the coronavirus is affecting city bus services in Giessen. When school starts again next Monday, Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) would normally switch from the holiday timetable back to the regular timetable. However, SWG will not be doing this. In the week from 19 to 23 April, they will also retain the holiday timetable - the morning reinforcement journeys will therefore be cancelled.

There are two reasons for the decision to continue reducing the timetable. Firstly, the district has announced that face-to-face lessons will only be held for the final-year classes. This means that the additional trips are not necessary due to the significantly lower utilisation of the vehicles. Secondly, SWG and its subsidiary MIT.BUS are currently experiencing a relatively high sickness rate among drivers. There are currently not enough drivers available to operate all of the usual bus extensions. The fact that the SWG Group is implementing the usual quarantine requirements very strictly is also contributing to this. Drivers who have had contact with potentially infected people are sent into quarantine as a precautionary measure in order to protect passengers and drivers as best as possible. "With this measure, we are trying to minimise the risk of infection for everyone involved and thus make an important contribution to containing the pandemic," says Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at SWG.

The current regulation applies for this week for the time being - with the option to extend it. "We are following events closely and will always adapt our services to the new situation as it arises," announces Anne Müller-Kreutz. If the authorities decide in the course of next week to continue to open the schools for only a few pupils, the current arrangement of running the buses according to the holiday timetable will remain in place. However, if the decision is made in favour of more face-to-face teaching in schools, SWG will respond by increasing the number of bus services.

In addition to the adjustments to the timetable, another change will come into force from 19 April 2021: the RMV mobility centre in Giessen will once again be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday.
