Right behind football, handball is the second most popular team sport in Germany. In Grünberg, 200 club members are also convinced by the ball sport. The Grünberg Mücke handball club (HSG) has eleven teams, including eight children's and youth groups. During his training sessions with the male C-youth team, Lars Pollmächer from Mittelhessen Netz GmbH (Mit.N), a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG), noticed that the goals were suffering from the ravages of time: bent frames, a net that had been mended several times, missing ground anchoring. Lars Pollmächer therefore suggested supporting the club with one of SWG's 75 good deeds in its anniversary year. No sooner said than done. Stadtwerke donated a goal to the handball club, which will be installed in the sports hall of the Theo Koch School. The HSG and the school joined forces for the second goal. "I've been fascinated by handball since I was a child because of its dynamism and high speed," explains Lars Pollmächer. "That's why, after 20 years as an active player, I decided to stay true to the sport as a coach. This way, I can offer children and young people the opportunity to play sport in an informal way."
The SWG sponsor handed over the symbolic donation cheque to the club's first chairman Stefan Gerdewitz on Thursday, 28 November. "Thanks to the support of Stadtwerke, we were able to purchase two new goals," says a delighted Stefan Gerdewitz. "For all handball enthusiasts in our club, this means more fun and more safety, as the goals can now be anchored in the ground, thus reducing the risk of injury."
