On Sunday 15 September, the Ringallee outdoor pool closes again for seven and a half months. Giessen's swimming pools can look back on an average season.

The Ringallee outdoor pool will be the last of Giessen's three outdoor pools to close its doors for 2024 on 15 September. Around 101,000 bathers came on the 134 days it was open - around the same number of visitors as last year. "The figures reflect what we all experienced here in the region - an average summer. It was cool and wet for long periods of time. That's why we could see early on that no records were to be expected this season," summarises Uwe Volbrecht, Head of Giessen's pools, adding: "But given the rather mixed weather, especially at the beginning of the summer, we are very satisfied with the season."

Another complete success

This summer, the largest of Giessen's three outdoor pools once again served as the venue for "Spiel' Dein Spiel" - City Day, an event that has always attracted many families to Ringallee. And rightly so. As part of this event, sports clubs from the region take the opportunity to present themselves and, above all, their programmes to a broad public. More than 1,200 visitors, young and old, came to find out more and try out the many different sports on offer.

The meandering of the Wieseck was also completed. This construction work by the gardening department lasted the whole summer, but did not actually affect the operation of the pool.

Closed, but not in hibernation

As is the case every year, a number of repairs and modernisations are scheduled in the months between closure and reopening. In autumn, for example, the focus is on restoring the area of the sunbathing lawn that was affected by the construction work. At the same time, the newly created dyke needs to be landscaped. "The gardening department is mainly involved here, but we are of course doing our bit to make it a success," announces Uwe Volbrecht. As part of this work, the Giessen swimming pools are also making the football pitch playable again and laying a new foundation for the basketball hoop. The construction of a sun sail is on the agenda for next spring. It will shade parts of the paddling pool and thus protect the sensitive skin of the youngest bathers.

As things stand today, the coming season will start at the beginning of May 2025, but Giessen Bäder will of course let you know in good time when exactly it will start again. And until then, the two Giessen indoor pools will be available with their numerous offers.
