Stadtwerke Gießen is reducing its district heating prices by an average of around 9.5 per cent at the start of the heating period.

Just in time for the energy-intensive heating period, Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) is reducing its district heating prices for all private customers as of 1 October 2024. The background to the reduction: SWG calculates its district heating prices according to fixed formulas that incorporate officially determined index values. These indices, published by the Federal Statistical Office, reflect the current comparatively relaxed situation on the energy markets. In concrete terms, this means For the vast majority of customers, the working price in the Öko Therm contract will fall by 2.2 cents to 16.22 cents per kilowatt hour. An average household in a flat with a connected load of four kilowatts and a heating requirement of 7,400 kilowatt hours will therefore save 149.67 euros per year. Customers living in a typical detached house with a connected load of 15 kilowatts and using 22,500 kilowatt hours of heat per year will pay €465.04 less than before.

Slight increase in other price components

These sample calculations already take into account that the performance price will increase by €1.53 per kilowatt per year and the billing price for meters up to 100 kilowatts will rise by €7.01 per year. These fixed price components, which are not dependent on consumption, are also linked to indices. In particular, the capital goods index calculated by the Federal Statistical Office is taken into account. The still high inflation is noticeable here. In addition, wage and salary trends, which are also influenced by inflation, also play a role. As the labour price usually accounts for the majority of district heating costs, the bottom line is an average price reduction of 9.5 percent.

Read and pass on the meter reading

A meter reading is not necessary. SWG calculates the meter reading as of 30 September using intelligent algorithms. However, it is of course possible to read the meter and send it to SWG. SWG once again offers a tried and tested procedure for this: A QR code is printed on each individual price reduction letter. Scanning this with a smartphone or tablet takes you to a pre-filled online form in which you only need to enter the meter reading.

Questions about the new heating prices can be answered by SWG customer advisors from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. by calling the service number 0800 23 02 100. Of course, the staff at the SWG customer centre on Marktplatz will also be happy to help. They are available Monday to Friday from 9 am to 6 pm. Last but not least, SWG has compiled a wealth of useful information on its website: www.stadtwerke-giessen.de
