The 20th good deed in the anniversary year: Stadtwerke Gießen donates a flow meter to the professional fire brigade.

Hydrants must provide a sufficient amount of water in the event of a fire. How much depends, among other things, on the number and size of the buildings in the neighbourhood. "If construction is taking place somewhere in the city, the capacity and cross-section of the hydrants at the respective location is determined in advance," explains Frank Mathes, deputy head of the Giessen fire brigade. To ensure that the hydrants are ready for use at all times, they are inspected and maintained every four years. A so-called flow meter is used for this test, which the fire brigade had to borrow regularly from Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) in the past - their own was defective and there was no money to buy a new one.
"We knew that the fire brigade absolutely needed new equipment. So we thought about how we could help," explains Michael Pohley from the Energy and Water Networks department at SWG. On Thursday, 25 April, the municipal utilities presented the Giessen fire brigade with a new flow meter and a symbolic cheque. Michael Pohley suggested the donation in kind as part of SWG's 75 good deeds in its anniversary year. "A great thing for us - we finally have the necessary equipment ourselves again and no longer have to borrow the device," says a delighted Frank Mathes.
