Municipal utilities end chlorination

Giessen's drinking water is once again bacteriologically safe. This is confirmed by the latest water sample results from the Giessen Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine. This is why Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) has no longer been adding chlorine to the water since Friday, 16 June 2006. "However, it is possible that our customers may still notice a slight odour of chlorine over the next few days. This is due to the fact that not all of the chlorinated water in the pipes may have been used up," says graduate engineer Peter Keller, Head of Water Systems Engineering at the municipal utilities.

Events of the last few days
During routine tests of the water, which are regularly carried out by the Giessen Institute for Hygiene and Environmental Medicine, a low level of contamination with coliform germs was detected last Friday. The entire Giessen water network was affected, with the exception of the districts of Kleinlinden, Lützellinden, Rödgen and Allendorf. As a result, SWG immediately added chlorine to the water. Further precautionary measures, such as advising customers to boil the water before use, were not necessary.
