For the second time in 14 days, obvious fraudsters are targeting electricity customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). SWG advises caution.
The scam changes, but the target remains the same: Dodgy callers are trying to persuade customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) to hand over their meter number and meter reading over the phone. With the flimsy justification that the electricity price guarantee will soon expire. And, of course, with the advice to calculate the individual consumption and offer a more favourable tariff.
"Don't hesitate, hang up immediately," recommends Ina Weller, SWG company spokesperson, adding: "That's not rude, but appropriate to the situation."
It is possible that there is more than just a dubious business model behind the calls. It is actually possible to switch providers without the customer's knowledge using their name, place of residence and meter number. This can then be cancelled, but this can involve a lot of effort. "It's best not to give out any data over the phone. This will save you a lot of trouble," continues Ina Weller.
Important features for identification
SWG knows from customers who have already been affected that the calls appear to be coming from a call centre, as relatively loud noises can be heard in the background. However, the decisive criterion is the two phone numbers that are also being sent: +49 491 5735994483 and +49 30 588805738. If you see these on the display, it is best not to pick up the phone at all.
SWG ask for support
In order to gather information about the suspected fraudsters and, with a bit of luck, even catch them, SWG is asking for support. Anyone who receives suspicious calls can call the SWG service number 0800 23 02 100 to report the incident. "The more we know, the better we can warn our customers," explains Ina Weller. In addition, any useful information increases the chances of prosecution.
