Suspected fraudsters are trying to obtain data from customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) by telephone. SWG advises caution.
Giessen. Once again, dodgy callers are active in the Giessen area. With the aim of persuading unsuspecting customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) to disclose personal data over the phone. The current scam: The unknown caller - in one reported case he called himself Rolf Meier - claims that an electricity price reduction is imminent. In order to benefit from this, the victims are asked to provide "a few details". "We assume that these are people who want to impose a different electricity contract on our customers," explains Ina Weller, SWG company spokesperson. In addition to the once again brazen behaviour, there is another known clue: The suspected fraudster has also sent the telephone number 033 18859977500.
Do not disclose anything
SWG urgently advises not to give any personal details over the phone. This is because the name, address and meter number are enough for the fraudsters to register their victims with another provider. "Although this can be reversed, it usually means a lot of effort," says Ina Weller and therefore recommends: "Just let the phone ring or reject the call if the display shows the suspicious number." If you do end up making a call, her advice is: "Just hang up as soon as someone asks for personal details." In this case, nobody need fear making a mistake. Stadtwerke Gießen would never ask for data over the phone. They have all the information they need to supply their customers.
SWG ask for support
In order to protect its customers and put a stop to the fraudsters, SWG is asking for support. Those affected can call the SWG service number 0800 23 02 100 to report further incidents and describe their experiences. The more SWG learns about the crooks and their methods, the better they can warn others and possibly even initiate criminal proceedings.
