The trend towards rising electricity prices was already apparent throughout Germany a few weeks ago. Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) published the new prices for its "PowerPack Private" electricity supply contract at the beginning of December. Now the electricity prices for the general tariff have also been finalised. Customers on the general tariff must also expect an increase. The labour price will rise by 0.35 cents to 16.30 cents per kilowatt hour (Ct/kWh) including all taxes. The basic price, the sum of the billing price and the performance price, will rise by 7.10 euros gross per year to 55.10 euros. An average household customer with an electricity consumption of 2,850 kWh per year will pay €519.65 in future. This means an additional charge of €17.04 per year or €1.42 per month. The prices for all tariff and PowerPack Private customers have therefore been increased by between 3.5 per cent and a maximum of 8.3 per cent in individual cases. In addition to the increased costs from the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the Combined Heat and Power Generation Act (KWK-G), the rise in electricity procurement costs of around 30 per cent over the past year is a decisive reason for the Giessen-based energy supplier to increase the price of the general tariff, as was previously the case for the PowerPack Private. The future working price of 16.30 cents per kilowatt hour for the general tariff alone includes 16.00 per cent VAT. The net price of 14.05 cents/kWh includes 14.59 per cent electricity tax and 10.39 per cent concession fee. Together with the EEG and KWK-G charges, around 40 per cent of the electricity costs are taxes and charges that SWG cannot influence, and SWG will publish the prices for the general electricity supply tariff in the next few days. The prices for natural gas and district heating, which will fall on 1 January 2004, will also be published in the next few days. Customers who purchase both electricity and natural gas or district heating from the local municipal utilities can also expect lower energy costs for the coming year, depending on their consumption. SWG will not automatically adjust the monthly instalment amounts to the new price landscape. Customers who wish to change their instalment amounts can do so by calling the service number 0180 22 11 100 Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
