Almost 250 interested members of the public accepted the invitation from Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) to an open day at the TREA - the thermal residue treatment and energy utilisation plant. Here they not only learnt how efficient and environmentally friendly heat is generated in the first plant. The experts from SWG also explained what TREA 2, which is still under construction, is all about.
Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has been generating CO2-neutral heat from processed waste in TREA 1 for seven years now. And SWG has been organising open days at this thermal waste treatment and energy recovery plant for almost as long. Last Sunday, the district heating specialists were able to significantly extend their guided tours. This is because TREA 2, a state-of-the-art combined heat and power plant that sets new standards in terms of efficiency, is currently being built right next to the well-known plant. In future, SWG will not only produce heat here, but also electricity at the same time.
Almost 250 citizens from the region wanted to find out exactly how the technology behind the TREA works, what the differences are and what advantages each one offers and accepted the invitation to the open day. "More and more people are realising how important it is to rethink the heating sector and are interested in our generation plants," says Joachim Kauß, Group Manager Operations, Heat Supply Department at SWG. Together with three colleagues, he guided visitors in groups of five to 20 people through TREA 1 and the construction site of TREA 2 at the open day and answered all their questions.
Speaking of the construction site: TREA 2 is actually already partly in trial operation. The combined heat and power plants installed here have been supplying heat and electricity since the end of 2016. If everything goes according to plan, the TREA 2 waste incineration line will be connected to the grid at the beginning of next year.
