District heating for five blocks of houses in Großen-Linden

Stadtwerke Gießen is expanding its district heating network in Großen-Linden.

District heating is proving to be a sensible alternative to individual heating systems for an increasing number of people. In Großen-Linden, too, demand is rising for this convenient way of heating homes and providing hot water in an environmentally friendly manner. That is why Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is expanding the existing district heating network. The necessary construction work will begin on 13 July 2026. If everything goes according to plan, SWG will complete the project by the end of 2026.

As district heating pipes usually run beneath the road surface, this will cause various disruptions to traffic. “We are aware that this sort of work causes inconvenience to local residents. But we are doing everything we can to keep this to a minimum,” explains SWG spokesperson Ulli Boos.

What exactly is happening?
In order to lay the highly insulated district heating pipes, SWG must have the various streets where they are working closed to traffic. They are proceeding in sections. The construction work will begin on Mittelweg, which will be completely closed between Gießener Pforte and number 3. Work will then continue on Friedhofsweg, where the first few metres from Gießener Pforte will need to be closed. The work will subsequently move to Gießener Pforte and Hermersdorfer Straße. SWG will complete the project with the final construction phase on Wiesenberger Ring.

Diversions will be put in place for the closures on Mittelweg and Friedhofsweg. Partial closures will suffice for all other construction sections. Traffic lights will be used to regulate traffic in these areas.

It is also important to note that parking spaces will not be available in the areas where the road is closed. Access to properties will generally remain possible. However, there may be temporary restrictions due to the works – for example, if an excavator is operating near a driveway. No interruptions to the electricity or water supply are expected. Should this nevertheless occur, SWG will give timely written notice.
