Instead of giving Christmas presents to business partners, Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) distributes donations to charitable organisations in the region. On 13 January, the Volunteer Centre for the City and District of Giessen received 5,000 euros for its important work.
Helping people to get involved - that is the mission of the Volunteer Centre for the City and District of Giessen e.V. However, there is more behind this simply formulated goal than the traditional placement of volunteers in suitable voluntary positions. The employees of the non-profit organisation advise interested parties, help associations to set up meaningful structures, organise training and further education for volunteers and much more. All of this requires not only full commitment, but also a lot of money. "The volunteer centre performs a valuable service for society," says Ina Weller, company spokesperson for Stadtwerke Gießen, confidently. "We are happy to support this important work," she added when handing over the symbolic cheque for 5,000 euros to Prof. Dr Adalbert Evers, Chairman of the Volunteer Centre.
Helping people into voluntary work
In his short speech of thanks, the retired university lecturer explained how the volunteer centre sees itself: "We see ourselves as a local development agency for volunteering." This includes, for example, supporting people who want to set up their own social project. This start-up support in particular is currently working excellently for the volunteer support of refugees. "The large number of enquiries confirms my view that commitment is not just the glue that holds society together. Commitment is the backbone of a society, the basis of sensible coexistence," says Prof Dr Adalbert Evers. The volunteer centre can therefore make optimum use of the 5,000 euros for its numerous current projects. So that even more people from the region can get involved, spend their time meaningfully and help others.
