City bus services with minor restrictions

After the summer holidays, MIT.BUS city buses will once again run largely to their normal timetable. Only a few extra services will have to be cancelled.

The end of the summer holidays is drawing nearer. And with it comes the time when many pupils will want to travel to school by bus. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) and its local transport subsidiary MIT.BUS are well aware of this responsibility. Over the past few weeks, they have been working flat out to ensure that this will be possible without any restrictions. “The last few weeks have indeed been challenging. But we are pleased that we will be able to offer regular services on schedule, just in time for the start of term,” emphasises Yvonne Wick, Managing Director of MIT.BUS. There is one slight downside, however: a few extra services will have to be cancelled. “We realise that this will cause some inconvenience. We apologise for this.”

This is how the buses will run after the summer holidays
The restrictions affect the extra services for pupils, which run in the mornings and at lunchtime.

The following school services will be cancelled in the morning:

  • The service on route 1 at 7.01 am from the Rechtenbacher Hohl stop
  • The service on route 3 at 7.12 am from the Gießen Schlangenzahl stop
  • The journeys on Line 5 at 7.02 am and 7.04 am from the Greizer Straße stop
  • The service on route 7 at 7.20 am from the Philosophenwald stop
  • The service on route 17 at 7.02 am from Rödgen Bürgerhaus

On Monday 10 August 2026, the 7.34 am service on Line 12 from Berliner Platz and the 7.19 am service on Line 802 from Westschule will also be cancelled on a one-off basis. These two services will run as normal again from Tuesday 11 August.

At midday, a total of two school services will be cancelled:

  • The service on Line 12 at 12.58 pm from Ostschule
  • The 12:59 service on route 802 from Westschule

All other school services will run as scheduled.

For all cancelled services, alternative timetables are available for pupils at short notice. Furthermore, the selection of services to be cancelled is based on data from MIT.BUS’s automatic passenger counting system. This has ensured that services with lower passenger numbers compared to other services are cancelled.

A challenging situation for SWG and MIT.BUS
The current situation is a consequence of the faults identified during the routine inspection in June. Although these have now been fully rectified, the repair work placed a full strain on the workshop and staff capacities of both SWG and MIT.BUS. Among other things, this meant that further faults which had arisen in the meantime – partly due to the persistently high temperatures – could not be rectified immediately. Furthermore, the availability of spare parts presents a real challenge.

All of this means that, at present, there are not enough buses available for service. “Of course, we are aware of the impact this is having on people’s daily lives. Over the past few weeks, we have explored numerous solutions to resolve the situation in both the short and long term, and we are continuing to do so in order to restore full bus services as quickly as possible,” assures Yvonne Wick. To this end, SWG and MIT.BUS are also working with external service providers to carry out the repairs as quickly as possible. SWG has initiated a solution to provide a short-term remedy. The company has procured four second-hand buses at short notice, which it is making temporarily available to MIT.BUS. In addition, SWG and MIT.BUS are examining further measures to resolve the situation as quickly as possible and return to normal service.

Further information is available by telephone on 0641 708-1400, online at www.mitbus.de/verkehrshinweise or at the RMV Mobility Centre in Gießen, located in the SWG Customer Centre on Marktplatz (opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm).
