In the Giessen area, con artists are once again posing as employees of Stadtwerke Giessen (SWG) and trying to gain access to customers' homes. "In one case recently, they were unfortunately successful with their brazen scam and stole a considerable amount of money," explains SWG company spokeswoman Ina Weller. The two men deceived an elderly lady with a made-up story. One of the fraudsters pretended to be an SWG employee. He told the woman that the drinking water had been contaminated and that he now had to check in the flat to see if clean water was flowing from the tap again. Together with the woman, he went into the kitchen and bathroom to turn on the taps - a diversionary manoeuvre. In the meantime, the accomplice sneaked into the flat and stole the woman's savings. The police are still investigating. Ina Weller warns: "You should ask to see the IDs carefully - if in doubt, don't let anyone in. Anyone who is suspicious or even just unsure can contact us at any time." Customer service can clarify whether SWG has actually commissioned employees. The contact persons can be reached on the service number 0800 23 02 100 (free of charge from the German landline network and all German mobile networks) from Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
