Seventeen young people started their training at Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) on 1 August. The programme kicked off with the traditional induction week.

 

 

Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is well positioned in the competition for young talent: With its practical and varied training programme, the company secures important skilled workers. The largest employer in the region has been training its own junior staff in a total of seven professions for years. In times when it is increasingly difficult to find qualified personnel, this is proving to be a decisive advantage. "Giving young adults the best possible start to their careers with sound training has always been an important part of our corporate strategy," summarises Vanessa Lischke, who is responsible for training at SWG. Her success proves her right: "This year, we were able to fill 17 out of 18 vacant apprenticeship places," says Vanessa Lischke. In this way, SWG is not only training the skilled workers of tomorrow, but also fulfilling its social responsibility in the region.

 

Comprehensive induction week

Before the professional training begins, the young adults go through the "Trainee Start Week". During this time, the career starters get to know each other and SWG and gain an insight into fundamental topics. The programme includes, for example, data protection and IT training, project work in the training workshop, telephone training, rights and obligations during training, occupational safety training and company health management. "Our introduction gives the young people a sense of security before they start in their respective departments in the next step," reports Vanessa Lischke from experience. Trainees who have already been with SWG for one or two years traditionally help to organise the launch week. This time, two industrial clerks from the 2nd year of training have taken on this task. "Our older trainees like to take the opportunity to get involved, take on responsibility and demonstrate their organisational skills," says Vanessa Lischke.

 

Professions with a future

There is a special feature this year: for the first time in 2024, SWG is training one person to become a vehicle mechatronics technician specialising in bodywork. Three of the seventeen young people have opted for the profession of plant mechanic in plant construction. Five would like to work as electronics technicians for industrial engineering after their training. Two people are starting as pool attendants and three are training to become industrial clerks. One IT specialist for system integration and two motor vehicle mechatronics technicians complete the team.
