Stadtwerke Gießen will be operating articulated buses on some routes to mark the carnival parade next Sunday. During the carnival festivities, traffic on some routes will have to be suspended. From 10 a.m., buses will also no longer run across the market square.

Friends of the fifth season who come from Giessen or the surrounding area are already looking forward to the traditional carnival parade on Sunday, 23 February. Once again this year, thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Giessen city centre to marvel at and celebrate the guards, music corps and floats. Many of the spectators come to the city centre by public transport. For this reason, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will once again be deploying spacious articulated buses on routes 1, 2 and 5/15.

In order for such a parade to take place, a whole series of route safety measures are required - even in advance. These are the reason why the buses will not be stopping at the Marktplatz, Oswaldsgarten, City Center and Stadttheater stops on 23 February between 10 am and 6 pm. "We have set up diversions via the city centre ring road for the affected routes. We ask our passengers to use the stops in the Berliner Platz area," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of SWG Local Transport Services. Lines 1 to and from Lützellinden as well as lines 12 and 801/802 will stop here between 1 pm and probably 4 pm. Services on lines 2, 6 and 7 will be completely suspended during the move. SWG also anticipates disruptions to all scheduled services until 6 pm.

Diversions and interruptions
While the carnival procession rolls through Giessen, some city bus routes will be suspended or run on alternative routes:
Line 1: From Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden, the buses will run to the Friedrichstraße stop and without stopping again via the Anlagenring to the Berliner Platz stop. From Rödgen in the direction of the city centre, bus services are suspended. From the Bürgerhaus, Brunnenweg and Helgenstock stops, a scheduled taxi will take passengers to the Volkshalle stop without stopping.
Line 3: Coming from the Friedhof stop, the line runs via Nordanlage, Westanlage, Bahnhofstraße, Liebigstraße, Frankfurter Straße, Wilhelmstraße, Ludwigstraße and Wartweg to the Schwarzacker stop and back.
Line 5/15: From the direction of Wieseck, the cars travel via Nordanlage, Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop and vice versa.
Line 801 and 802: From Wettenberg, the trolleys run after the stops in Weststadt via Nordanlage and Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 11: From Wetzlar via Dutenhofen and Kleinlinden, the trams run to the Klinikstraße stop.
Line 12: From Sandfeldschule, the buses run via Ostanlage to Berliner Platz.
Line 24: From Wetzlar via Lahnau, Kinzenbach and Heuchelheim, the buses will travel via Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop.
Lines 2, 6 and 7 will be completely cancelled between around 1 and 4 pm.

Cheaper with the group day ticket
SWG has another tip for all carnival fans: if you are travelling to Giessen on the city bus with up to five people, you can travel cheaper with a group day ticket. It costs 7.90 euros for the city journey and is therefore worthwhile for two adults travelling there and back.

All information on timetable changes is also available at the Stadtwerke Gießen customer centre on Marktplatz, by telephone on 0641 708-1400 or online at www.swg-verkehr.de.
