Stadtwerke Gießen will be operating articulated buses on some routes to mark the carnival parade next Sunday. During the carnival festivities, scheduled services will have to be suspended on some routes. From 10 a.m., buses will also no longer run across the market square.
Friends of the fifth season who come from Giessen or the surrounding area are already looking forward to the traditional carnival parade on Sunday, 3 March. Once again this year, thousands of people are expected to line the streets of Giessen city centre to marvel at the guards, music corps and floats. Many of them will be travelling to Giessen by public transport. This is why Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will once again be deploying spacious articulated trams on lines 1, 2 and 5/15 this year.
In order for such a move to take place, a number of route safety measures are required - even in advance. These are the reason why the buses will not be stopping at the "Marktplatz", "Oswaldsgarten" and "Stadttheater" stops on 3 March between 10 am and 6 pm. "We have set up diversions via the city centre ring road for the affected routes. We ask passengers to use the stops in the Berliner Platz area," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of SWG Local Transport Services. Important for passengers travelling on lines 2, 6 and 7: their services will have to be completely suspended during the move. In addition, SWG anticipates disruptions to all scheduled services between 1 pm and 6 pm.
Diversions and interruptions
While the jesters take over Giessen, some city bus routes will be suspended or run on alternative routes:
Line 1: From Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden, the buses will run to the Friedrichstraße stop and without stopping again via the Anlagenring to the Berliner Platz stop. From Rödgen in the direction of the city centre, bus services are suspended. From the Bürgerhaus, Brunnenweg and Helgenstock stops, a scheduled taxi will take passengers to the Volkshalle stop without stopping.
Line 3: From the Schwarzacker stop, the line runs to the Schiffenberger Weg stop and back. From the Friedhof stop, the line runs via Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 5/15: From the direction of Wieseck, the buses travel via Nordanlage, Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop and vice versa.
Line 801 and 802: From Wettenberg, the trolleys run after the stops in Weststadt, via Nordanlage and Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 12: From Sandfeldschule, the buses will travel via Ostanlage to Berliner Platz.
Line 11: From Wetzlar via Dutenhofen and Kleinlinden, the buses run to the Klinikstraße stop.
Line 24: From Wetzlar via Lahnau, Kinzenbach and Heuchelheim, the buses travel via Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop.
Lines 2, 6 and 7 will be completely cancelled between around 1 and 4 pm.
Cheaper with the group day ticket
SWG has another tip for all carnival fans: if you are travelling to Giessen on the city bus with up to five people, you can travel cheaper with a group day ticket. It costs 7.80 euros for the city journey - a single adult journey costs 2.20 euros.
