On the occasion of the carnival parade this coming Sunday, Stadtwerke Gießen will be deploying additional articulated buses on some routes. During the parade, scheduled services will have to be interrupted on some routes. From 10 a.m., buses will also no longer run via the market square.
Carnival fans from Giessen and the surrounding area are eagerly awaiting Sunday 26 February. This is when the annual parade takes place, attracting thousands of people to Giessen city centre. This year, too, many revellers will be travelling by public transport. For this reason, Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) will be operating spacious articulated buses on routes 1, 2 and 5. Furthermore, additional buses will start from the "Berliner Platz" stop on several lines after the parade.
Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of SWG Local Transport Services, points out: "For safety reasons, we will not be able to serve the stops 'Marktplatz', 'Oswaldsgarten' and 'Stadttheater' from 10 am to around 6 pm. However, we have set up diversion routes via the city centre ring road for the affected lines. We ask passengers to use the stops in the Berliner Platz area." Passengers travelling on lines 2, 6 and 7 should also note that their services will be completely suspended during the move. SWG expects disruptions to all regular services between 1 pm and 6 pm.
Diversions and interruptions
While the carnival procession makes its way through Giessen, some city bus routes will be suspended. Others will be taking alternative routes during this time:
Line 1: From Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden, buses will run to the Friedrichstraße stop and continue without stopping to the Berliner Platz stop. From Rödgen in the direction of the city centre, bus services will be suspended. From the Bürgerhaus, Brunnenweg and Helgenstock stops, a scheduled taxi will take passengers to the Volkshalle stop without stopping.
Line 3: Due to the existing diversion, services between the Schwarzacker and Berliner Platz stops will be suspended from 1 pm to 4 pm. From the direction of the Friedhof stop, the line will run via Ostanlage to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 5: From the direction of Wieseck, the cars will travel via Nordanlage, Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop.
Line 801 and 802: From Wettenberg, the trams run via the Weststadt, Nordanlage and Ostanlage stops to the Berliner Platz stop.
Line 12: From Sandfeldschule, the buses run via Ostanlage to Berliner Platz.
Line 11: From Wetzlar via Dutenhofen and Kleinlinden, the buses run to the Bahnhof stop.
Line 24: From Wetzlar via Lahnau, Kinzenbach and Heuchelheim, the buses travel via Westanlage and Bahnhofstraße to the Bahnhof stop.
Lines 2, 6 and 7 will be completely cancelled between around 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Cheaper with the group day ticket
Anne Müller-Kreutz has a tip for all carnival fans: "If you are travelling to Giessen on the city bus with up to five people, you can travel cheaper if you buy a group day ticket. It costs 7.80 euros for the city trip - a single journey for adults costs 2.15 euros."
