Due to the carnival parade, Giessen city centre will be partially closed on Sunday, 19 February. Stadtwerke Giessen has set up diversion routes for the affected bus routes. Delays and cancellations are to be expected.
Fools and carnival revellers are delighted: on Sunday, 19 February, there will finally be another carnival parade in Giessen. It starts at 13:30 in the Ringallee. After a two-year break due to the coronavirus, thousands of people are expected to flock to the city centre again this year to cheer on the colourful floats, smart guards and traditional music corps.
Changed route leads to closures
To ensure that the parade can take place in an organised manner, the organisers are already securing the route in advance. As the parade will be passing through Berliner Platz and Südanlage this time due to the roadworks in Ludwigstraße, there will be extensive closures in the city centre between 10:00 and 18:00. This will have a considerable impact on regular bus services: the bus stops "Marktplatz", "Oswaldsgarten", "Stadttheater", "Johanneskirche", "Selterstor", "Behördenzentrum", "Berliner Platz", "Landgericht" and "Liebigstraße" will not be accessible during this time. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has set up diversion routes for the affected lines. Delays in operations and cancellations are to be expected.
Diversions in city bus services
While the parade floats roll through Giessen, some city bus routes will use alternative routes or take a break:
Line 1
Buses will run from Lützellinden via Allendorf and Kleinlinden to the "Friedrichstraße" stop and on to the "Bahnhof" stop. From Rödgen, the line initially runs as usual from the "Bürgerhaus" stop to the "Volkshalle" stop. From there, it will continue via the "Lutherberg" stop to Eichendorffring and back, taking up the route of line 2 in this section.
Line 2
The journeys between the "Bahnhof" and "Nahrungsberg" stops will be cancelled. From the "Eichendorffring" stop, the line will initially run as usual to the "Lutherberg" stop. From there, it will continue via the "Volkshalle" stop to Rödgen "Bürgerhaus" and back, taking up the route of Line 1 in this section.
Line 3
The journeys take place between the stops "Friedhof" and "Mühlstraße" in the Westanlage and back. The cars also run between the final stop "Schwarzacker" and the stop "Ulner Dreieck" in Aulweg and back.
Lines 5 / 15
The journeys run from the "Steinstraße" stop in Marburger Straße via Nordanlage to the "Mühlstraße" stop and then via Gabelsberger Straße and Lahnstraße to the "Parkhaus Lahnstraße" stop. Use the favourable group day ticket
For all carnival fans travelling stress-free by public transport, SWG has another money-saving tip: if you are travelling to Giessen by city bus with up to five people, you can travel cheaper with the group day ticket. It costs 8.80 euros for the city journey - and is therefore worthwhile for two adults travelling there and back together.
