Bus travel will cost a little more again next year. But not everywhere and not for everyone. This is because the city of Giessen is subsidising some tickets for recipients of social benefits.
On 15 June 2023, the Supervisory Board of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund decided to increase fares by an average of 8.2 percent from 1 January 2024. In price level 1 for the tariff area of the city of Giessen and the municipality of Heuchelheim, a single journey for adults will cost 2.75 euros instead of the previous 2.55 euros. The price for a single journey for children will rise from 1.50 euros to 1.60 euros. With the RMV savings pass, a single ticket costs 2.05 euros. The price of the monthly ticket for Giessen will increase from 50.60 euros to 54.90 euros. The price adjustments for the monthly passes are accompanied by corresponding fare changes for the annual passes. In future, school pupils and trainees will pay 43.40 euros for their monthly travelcard.
The price of the Hesse Schoolchildren's Ticket and the Hesse Senior Citizens' Ticket will remain stable. Users will pay 365 euros for a one-off payment or 372 euros for a monthly direct debit. The Deutschlandticket is also still available at the same conditions - as a subscription for 49 euros per month. In combination with the Hessenpass mobil, the price drops to 31 euros per month. "We are very pleased that we can continue to offer these tickets at these attractive conditions," explains Anne Müller-Kreutz, Head of Local Transport Services at Stadtwerke Gießen.
The city of Giessen is contributing
The city parliament has decided to amend the statutes for the Giessen Pass. This will make the use of public transport cheaper for all those who receive social benefits. "It is important to us that we can guarantee mobility for everyone and thus also reconcile social and climate policy goals," summarises the responsible department head Francesco Arman. The city of Giessen has therefore decided to offer the Deutschlandticket with Hessenpass mobil for eligible persons with their main residence in the city of Giessen from 1 January 2024 at a price of 20 euros per month - another 11 euros cheaper. "Bus and rail travel throughout Germany for 20 euros a month - that's a big relief for many wallets," adds Francesco Arman. Advance ticket sales start in January. Anyone who hands in their order form by 10 January will be able to use their ticket from 1 February. Important to know: The discounted subscription is only available at the Giessen Mobility Centre on presentation of the Hessenpass mobil and the Giessen Pass. Anyone already using the Deutschlandticket with Hessenpass mobil subscription must submit a new application and present their valid Giessen Pass in order to receive the additional discount. There is no automatic changeover. It is also not possible to receive the discount retroactively. The date of submission of the order form applies.
In addition, the city of Giessen continues to subsidise monthly and weekly tickets valid in Giessen and Heuchelheim. Such a ticket will then cost a standardised 18 euros instead of the previous 22.30 euros for adults and 20 euros for trainees. In future, the weekly ticket will be available to holders of the Giessen Pass for 6 euros. The discount on single tickets will be discontinued on 31 December 2023.
