SWG's waterworks in Queckborn opened its doors to interested visitors from the region on Tuesday, 22 March. On Water Day - an annual event organised by the United Nations - around 20 guests took a look behind the scenes of drinking water extraction and treatment. They learnt about the sources from which the water for Giessen and the surrounding area comes, the route it takes to reach each individual tap and the technology used. Water is the most strictly controlled foodstuff in Germany. As a water supplier for various towns and municipalities in the Central Hesse region, the municipal utilities guarantee the impeccable quality of the drinking water. The guided tour of the waterworks in Queckborn made all visitors aware of the enormous effort that goes into the process, which usually goes unnoticed when showering, washing up or brushing teeth.

This is one of the main reasons why the United Nations reminds us every year on 22 March how precious water is and urges us to use it sustainably. This year's central theme: "Water for cities - responding to urban challenges". According to experts, climate and demographic developments in particular are increasing the demands on suppliers worldwide. The German Association of Energy and Water Industries considers Germany to be well equipped thanks to sustainable management in the extraction, handling and protection of water.
