As part of the 100th anniversary of local public transport, Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) presented the book "Der Stadtverkehr in Gießen" on Monday evening together with Dr Ludwig Brake, head of the city archives and the authors Dieter Eckert and Dietrich Augstein. The book impressively illustrates the details of local transport history and documents the diverse operational events of the last 100 years in words and pictures. As host, Manfred Siekmann, Chairman of the Board, emphasised that the book saves the eventful history of local transport in Giessen from being forgotten. While two tram lines were sufficient in the first 25 years, the expansion of the city area made a new solution necessary: trolleybuses. However, these then gradually disappeared from the Giessen cityscape and were first replaced by diesel-powered buses and, in recent years, by environmentally friendly natural gas buses.
Day of action: 100 years of local public transport
On Friday, 20 November, everything will revolve around the history of local public transport in Giessen on the action day around the infoZentrum on the market square. From 10:00 to 18:00, Stadtwerke Gießen AG (SWG) will be presenting a vintage bus and a historical exhibition. On a large plasma screen, visitors can get an overview of the eventful history through an animated presentation. Anyone who also takes part in the competition and correctly answers the question "When did Giessen's local public transport system begin" can win a travel voucher worth 600 euros and then enjoy a free hot drink.
