Open day at Stadtwerke Giessen - the Giessen guilds for electrical engineering and information technology, plumbing, heating and air conditioning technology, the district youth fire brigade and the Giessen46ers all took part in the event
"We show what we can do" was the motto of the open day at Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). Natural gas vehicles, cable measuring van, water measuring van, bus workshop and CHP - technology to touch and familiarise yourself with. Training was another focal point of the day. Young people from the fire brigade, the guilds for electrical and information technology as well as for sanitary, heating and air conditioning technology and SWG trainees demonstrated their skills. More than 500 visitors accepted the invitation to the Visitors' Day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and were impressed by the wide range of information on offer.
Training centre, SWG shop and enerGIeßen
Anyone interested in a commercial career at SWG was able to find out about training as an industrial clerk. Trainees from the swimming pools department demonstrated what it takes to give an injured person the right artificial respiration. Technology enthusiasts found what they were looking for in the electrical and metal workshops in the training centre. Visitors were able to look over the shoulders of the technical trainees at work and also put their skills to the test themselves. Anyone who wanted to could make a solitaire game and take it home with them. If that wasn't enough technology for you, you could let the young people convince you of the benefits of enerGIeßen energy services or take part in the technology tour through SWG's switching house, substation and grid control centre. The SWG shop, a project of the commercial trainees, was also pleased to see a lot of shoppers. The trainees had put together the range of goods for sale.
Guilds from the skilled trades
Apprentices from specialised companies from the guilds for electrical and information technology and for sanitary, heating and air-conditioning technology presented themselves and their professions in a large exhibition tent. The processing steps in the house were illustrated to visitors by means of meter cabinets and pipe connection techniques on display. Young people were particularly interested in testing their own dexterity: Threads were cut and cables fitted. Further information on training opportunities in the trades was provided by the competent staff of the Giessen District Trades Association.
Fire brigade in action
The fire brigade impressed visitors with their fire engines and technical assistance vehicles. Visitors were also able to put their manual skills to the test and make wooden stilts with the help of the youth fire brigade.
Good entertainment with the GIESSEN 46ers
A special highlight of the day was the presentation of the new GIESSEN 46ers team on the SWG stage. Winners of the SWG basketball contest were even able to train with 46ers players and Fabius, the mascot. There was also an autograph session. Good entertainment was provided not only by music and expert talks moderated by the trainees, but also by a competition and the SWG wheel of fortune. Visitors were well catered for in the SWG catering area.
