World Water Day: Visit to the waterworks
To mark World Water Day, Stadtwerke Gießen is once again offering a free guided tour of the Queckborn waterworks on 20 March 2026.
Fresh water straight from the tap - something that is taken for granted in Germany remains an unattainable wish for billions of people around the world. World Water Day, which was established by the United Nations, reminds us every year that access to clean drinking water is a human right and that water is our most important foodstuff. It also emphasises the global importance of clean water and the sustainable use of this resource.
Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is also taking part in this day of action. On 20 March 2026 at 2 p.m., interested citizens will have the opportunity to trace the path of water as part of a free guided tour of the Queckborn waterworks. Participants will learn first-hand how SWG extracts, treats and safely transports the precious water to households - including fascinating insights into the complex technical systems and processes. The programme includes a tour of the waterworks in Grünberg-Queckborn and a visit to the middle zone tank near Fernwald-Annerod.
Limited places available
SWG is organising a free special bus service for the guided tour on the afternoon of 20 March 2026: the bus will take those interested from the "Behördenzentrum" bus stop (directly opposite the Kinopolis at the Ostanlage in Giessen) to the waterworks at 2 p.m. on the dot. After the end of the event, the special bus will take all participants back there at around 5.30 pm. The number of places is limited to 35 people - interested parties should therefore register early. This is possible until 13 March 2026 by calling the service number 0800 23 02 100.
Guided tours for groups all year round
SWG also offers guided tours of the Queckborn waterworks for school classes, clubs or other larger groups (20 to 35 people) outside of World Water Day. To make an appointment for a tour, a corresponding form is available at www.stadtwerke-giessen.de/fuehrungen.
