To mark World Water Day on 22 March, Stadtwerke Gießen is inviting interested parties to take a look behind the scenes at the Queckborn waterworks.
Fresh water straight from the tap - still not a matter of course for many people in poorer regions of the world. Current figures show that around 2.2 billion people have no access to clean drinking water. World Water Day on 22 March draws attention to the importance of clean water and the sustainable use of this resource. Established by the United Nations in 1992, the day is an annual reminder that water is the most important foodstuff. And that safe access to it is a human right.
Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) is also taking part in this day of action and is offering interested citizens the opportunity to join a free guided tour of the Queckborn waterworks on Friday, 21 March. Participants will learn first-hand about the drinking water supply in this country - in particular how SWG extracts, treats and transports drinking water. The excursion offers exciting insights into the technical facilities and processes. The programme includes a tour of the Queckborn waterworks and a visit to the central zone tank in Annerod.
Limited number of places
SWG has set up a free special bus service for the afternoon of 21 March: At 2 p.m. on the dot, a bus will take those interested from the "Behördenzentrum" bus stop, directly opposite the Kinopolis cinema on the Ostanlage in Giessen, to the waterworks. After the end of the event at around 5.30 pm, the special bus will take all participants back there. The number of places is limited to 35 people - so anyone interested should register quickly. This is still possible until 14 March by calling the service number 0800 23 02 100.
