TREA II Open Day cancelled

Due to a fire at TREA II on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, the planned open day on Sunday, 30 August has had to be cancelled.

On Tuesday evening, 25 August 2026, a fire broke out in the main bunker of the Thermal Waste Treatment and Energy Recovery Plant II (TREA II) on Leihgesterner Weg, involving the waste stored there. As a result, the planned open day on Sunday 30 August 2026 has unfortunately had to be cancelled.

As the source of the fire was located in an internal, enclosed area, the fire was easily brought under control and contained. The cause of the fire is currently unknown; third-party negligence was not a factor. The fire was immediately detected as it broke out by the fire monitoring system installed at the plant and was quickly brought under control thanks to the rapid response of the Giessen professional fire brigade and surrounding voluntary fire brigades. At no time was there any danger to people or the environment.

Those in charge are currently working on site to remove the stored fuel from the main bunker to ensure that all embers are completely extinguished.
