Stadtwerke Gießen is warning against dubious callers trying to obtain the meter numbers of customers of Stadtwerke Gießen.

Once again, dubious callers are trying to obtain sensitive data from customers of Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG). SWG is aware of two specific cases. One caller claimed to be an employee of SWG, the second claimed to be acting on behalf of SWG. Both were pursuing the same goal. They urged their potential victims to give their meter number. The calls came from the numbers 040 855992312 and 069 12001803.

The people called reacted correctly, refused to provide information and ended the call. "Exactly the right course of action," says Matthias Acker, deputy company spokesman for SWG. This is because the suspected fraudsters could use the meter number to cancel the contract with SWG and offer their victims a new contract with another provider - usually at a significantly higher cost.

Never disclose data over the phone

If you know a few clues, you can expose such fraudsters relatively easily. "Our employees never ask for customer data over the phone," emphasises Matthias Acker. This is because SWG has all the necessary information. The fact that someone calls with an area code other than 0641 and claims to be from SWG should also make you suspicious. In general, as soon as someone asks for personal data, such as a customer number, bank details or a meter number, extreme caution is advised. "Don't get involved in a conversation and hang up straight away," is Matthias Acker's recommendation.

Report calls to SWG

One customer reported the two cases described to SWG. "We are very grateful for this," explains Matthias Acker and adds: "We can only warn people in the region about scammers if we hear about such calls." Such reports can be made by phone on 0800 23 02 100, by email to info@stadtwerke-giessen.de or by WhatsApp to 0151 15213066.
