SWG extend cooperation with Gießen-Achter
Stadtwerke Giessen is supporting the Giessen eight for another three years.
Rowing has a long history in Giessen. The Giessen Eight successfully continues this tradition - as an integral part of the German Rowing League. The project was launched in 2012 as a collaboration between the Giessen Rowing Society 1877 and the Giessen Rowing Club Hassia 1906, and the boat has been competing in Germany's highest class without interruption since being promoted again in 2016. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has been on board as a partner and sponsor for 10 years. Their support includes both financial support, which gives the team the necessary planning security for the league, and active involvement as an event partner at regattas. This successful cooperation will now continue for another three years. "We are proud to continue to be a partner of a team that shapes rowing in the region like no other," emphasises Ulli Boos, company spokesperson for SWG.
Bundesliga premiere in Giessen
In the 2025 season, the cooperation reached a high point with the first German Rowing League race day in Giessen in May. For the first time, a total of 22 first-class teams competed against each other in sprint races on the River Lahn. As a presenting partner, SWG played a key role in making this regatta in Giessen possible. "For us as a team, this home race was something very special and a real highlight," recalls team captain and stroke Johannes Birkhan.
The success of the Giessen eight is based on the voluntary commitment of numerous helpers. The team is also dependent on reliable sponsors. After all, a Bundesliga season and the equipment cost a lot of money. Team boss Eric Baumann puts it this way: "Over the years, Giessen has developed into a regatta centre that is known beyond the region. This would not have been possible without long-standing partnerships such as the one with Stadtwerke Gießen. That's why the support is particularly valuable to us."
