Stadtwerke Gießen is building a new district heating pipeline. It crosses the Giessen-Fulda railway line at the level of Stephanstraße. The pressing required for the undercrossing is unfortunately associated with a certain amount of noise and will last into the night.

Giessen. In a nationwide comparison, Giessen occupies one of the top places when it comes to the supply of environmentally friendly district heating. Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) has built up the necessary pipeline network for this over the past 30 years or so. SWG is currently expanding its network to further promote the supply of efficient district heating: The municipal utilities are laying a new main line in both Stephanstraße and Ebelstraße this year.
This line crosses the Giessen-Fulda railway line. This will not only involve time-consuming construction work using specialised machinery, but will unfortunately also cause a certain amount of noise nuisance for local residents. In order to press the pipeline under the tracks, SWG will first have to excavate two large pits. From 15 October 2013, a huge machine will then press a pipe with a diameter of 900 millimetres through the ground from the pit in Stephanstraße into the second pit 30 metres away. For technical reasons, this pressing process must not be interrupted. If it were to come to a standstill, there would be a risk of the tracks sinking due to the resulting cavities.
Consequently, SWG has no choice but to carry out the work around the clock - including at night. If everything goes according to plan, the pipe should reach the target pit on 18 October. "We are doing everything we can to keep to our tight schedule and minimise noise pollution," promises Lothar Fey, SWG project manager.
