At Uferweg 14, members of the Giessen Rowing Club Hassia 1906 (GRC Hassia) regularly put their boats in the Lahn to prepare for competitions. 90 athletes, including 20 children and young people, train several times a week on the club's home course above Klinkel'sche Mühle in Giessen city centre. The Stadtwerke Gießen (SWG) dragon boat team - the "Rohrleger" - has also been practising for regattas on this section of the Lahn for several years. The company team comprises a total of 25 employees and has a 20-strong crew for races. Mathias Döll from SWG's Technical Services department is also part of the team. The experienced dragon boat athlete explains: "Before and during our sessions and at competitions, we often get talking to the rowers from Hassia. That's how I found out that the club wanted to buy new life jackets for children and young people." Mathias Döll then suggested that his employer support the GRC Hassia with the purchase of the safety equipment - one of the 75 good deeds in the anniversary year.
On Saturday 27 July, he handed over a symbolic donation cheque for 20 life jackets to Sports Chairman Ernst Pawlowski, Dragon Boat Keeper Steffen Kohlitz and Public Relations Chairman Eric Baumann. "Safety is our top priority, and this is especially true for the youngsters in our club. We therefore attach great importance to modern equipment, which we make available to the young athletes - but which is not very cheap at the same time," explained Ernst Pawlowski at the cheque presentation. Together with Steffen Kohlitz and Eric Baumann, the chairman expressed his thanks for the help and wished the SWG dragon boat team every success in the upcoming races.
